DD Travel Hammock/Bivi: A Hammock That Also Works as a Ground Bivi
The DD Travel Hammock/Bivi is a double-layered camping hammock with a built-in mosquito net and a waterproof floor. Hang it between trees, or peg it out on the ground as a bivi when the next campsite turns out to be tree-free. It comes with 10m of webbing pre-fitted, two 60cm spreader poles, two elastic cords and a stuff sack, and is part of our Hammock Camping range.
DD Travel or Frontline? Waterproof Floor vs Breathable Base
DD says the Travel has the same construction as the DD Frontline Hammock with one key difference: a waterproof lower layer. Both have a built-in mosquito net and can be set up on the ground as a bivi, though DD suggests a ground sheet beneath the Frontline on wet ground. DD calls the Travel "not ideal solely for use as a hammock", notes that some users may get mild condensation from the waterproof floor, and suggests the Frontline for a cross-season hammock. Choose the Travel if ground use is a real possibility.
A Waterproof Floor Is Not Rain Cover: You Will Need a Tarp
DD's FAQ says none of its hammocks protect you from heavy rain; the Travel's waterproof base is for camping bivi-style on damp ground. For rain, DD recommends a tarp overhead, hung higher or in a diamond shape for more air flow. Our DD Tarp 3x3 Pro is described as the perfect size for individual hammock shelters, and the DD Superlight Tarp as perfect coverage for regular-sized hammocks at about half a kilogram.
Setting It Up on the Ground
DD's spec sheet says to lay the hammock flat on ground clear of sharp rocks or sticks, peg out its four accessory loops, and tie the elastic cords to a tree, pole or hiking pole to lift the net. DD's list of what is included does not name pegs, so add a set, such as our DD Pegs + Guy Lines pack or DD Heavy Duty Pegs x12.
Hanging It Safely, and What the 125kg Limit Means
DD says the hammock is "comfortable for people up to 6ft 5in and 125kg", its maximum recommended limit for two-layered hammocks, with the user lying on top of both layers. DD does not say whether that is a working limit or a tested breaking figure, or whether it allows for kit, so treat it as the most the hammock should carry. It is for one person, and not suitable for children under 3.
DD's guide asks for two alive, sturdy trees at least 15cm across and 3 to 5 metres apart, with enough slack because a flatter hang puts more force on the suspension, and DD recommends the lowest point be no more than 80cm above the ground. Check cordage and knots before each use. DD says to use only its own suspension with its hammocks; we stock DD Tree Huggers, DD Daisy Chain Tree Straps, DD Whoopie Slings and DD Hammock Karabiners. Read DD's full set-up guide first.
Specifications and Construction
The Travel measures 2.7m x 1.4m and weighs 930g (hammock only, as DD states it). It is double-layered with a velcro tab closure, so in cooler weather you can slide a partially inflated mat between the layers, and DD says the lower layer uses the same waterproof material as its tarps. DD says the ultra-fine mesh net zips closed and protects against all insects. We list it in Coyote Brown and Olive.
Hand wash only in lukewarm water, never machine wash, and dry it completely before packing; DD warns that prolonged strong UV light can weaken the material.
Who It Suits, and Who Should Think Twice
DD points it at backpackers and long-distance hikers, and it may also suit paddlers camping where trees are scarce. Think twice if you mainly want a hammock for hot-weather hanging, weigh more than 125kg, or are buying for a young child.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the DD Travel Hammock/Bivi waterproof?
Only the floor. DD says the Travel's waterproof base is there so you can camp bivi-style on damp ground, and that none of its hammocks protect you from heavy rain, so use a tarp overhead. See our camping tarps.
Can the DD Travel Hammock/Bivi be used on the ground?
Yes. DD's spec sheet says to lay it flat on ground clear of sharp rocks or sticks, peg out the four accessory loops, and use the spreader poles and elastic cords to lift the net before unzipping and climbing in. DD's included list does not name pegs, so add a set such as our DD Pegs + Guy Lines.
What is the difference between the DD Travel and DD Frontline hammocks?
DD says they share the same construction, and the one key difference is the Travel's waterproof lower layer, where the DD Frontline Hammock has breathable base layers. Both have a built-in mosquito net and can be set up on the ground, and DD suggests the Frontline for a cross-season hammock.
What is included with the DD Travel Hammock/Bivi?
DD lists the hammock, 10m of webbing (pre-fitted), two elastic cords, two 60cm spreader poles and a stuff sack. A tarp, pegs and insulation are not on DD's list, so they are separate.
What does the DD Travel Hammock's 125kg weight limit mean?
125kg is DD's maximum recommended limit for its two-layered hammocks, with the user lying on top of both layers. DD does not say whether it is a working limit or a tested breaking figure, or whether it allows for kit, so treat it as the most the hammock should carry. The trees and suspension are a separate load, and a flatter hang puts more force on the suspension.
Do I need a tarp with the DD Travel Hammock/Bivi?
Yes, if there is any chance of rain, because the waterproof floor does not protect you from above. Our DD Tarp 3x3 Pro is described as the perfect size for individual hammock shelters, and the DD Tarp XL as able to cover two hammocks side by side.
Is the DD Travel Hammock/Bivi good for hot weather or regular hanging?
It is not DD's first choice for that. DD says the Travel is "not ideal solely for use as a hammock", that some users may get mild condensation from the waterproof floor, and that the Frontline is the one to consider for a cross-season hammock. If you do hang the Travel, DD suggests pitching the tarp higher or in a diamond shape for more air flow.
