DD Frontline Hammock: A Light Camping Hammock with a Built-In Mosquito Net

The DD Frontline Hammock is a double-layered camping hammock with a zip-up mosquito net built in. It arrives ready to hang, with 10m of webbing pre-fitted, two 60cm spreader poles, elastic cord and a stuff sack, and DD describes it as suitable for any level of hammock camping experience. It sits in our Hammock Camping range, and at 850g (hammock only) it is light enough to consider for a canoe or kayak camping kit.

Frontline or Travel? Breathable Base vs Waterproof Floor

The Frontline has a breathable base, and DD states plainly that it is not waterproof. If you want a waterproof base, look at the DD Travel Hammock/Bivi instead. Both have a built-in mosquito net and can be set up on the ground as a bivi, though on wet ground DD recommends a groundsheet beneath the Frontline.

You Will Need a Tarp for Rain

Because the Frontline is not waterproof, plan on a tarp over it wherever rain is possible. Our DD Tarp 3x3 Pro is described as the perfect size for individual hammock shelters, and the DD Tarp XL is designed to cover two hammocks side by side. To hang it another way, we also stock DD Tree Huggers, DD Daisy Chain Tree Straps, DD Whoopie Slings and DD Hammock Karabiners.

Hanging It Safely, and What the 125kg Limit Means

DD gives the size as 2.7m x 1.4m, "comfortable for people up to 6ft 5in and 125kg", and says to follow the maximum recommended weight limit. DD does not say whether 125kg is a working limit or a tested breaking figure, or whether it allows for kit in the hammock, so treat it as the most the hammock should carry, with no extra margin assumed.

The suspension and trees are a separate load. DD's guide asks for two alive, sturdy trees at least 15cm across and 3 to 5 metres apart, and says the flatter the hang, the greater the force on the suspension, so leave enough slack. Check the cordage and knots before hanging, do not hang it too low, and check beneath for sharp objects. Read DD's full set-up guide first.

Specifications and Construction

The Frontline measures 2.7m x 1.4m, with a double-layered base and velcro tab closure: lie between the layers to cocoon yourself, or insert a partially inflated mat between them in cooler weather. DD says the ultra-fine mesh net zips closed and protects against all insects, even the Scottish midge.

The hammock weighs 850g (hammock only), which DD's spec sheet says excludes the webbing and poles, and it comes with a stuff sack. We list it in Forest Green and Jet Black.

Hand wash only in lukewarm water, never machine wash, and dry the hammock and cordage completely before packing. DD warns that prolonged strong UV light can weaken the material.

Who It Suits, and Who Should Think Twice

It suits hammock campers who want the net built in, paddlers building a light overnight kit, and existing DD owners adding a second hammock. Think twice if you want a waterproof floor, weigh more than 125kg, or are buying for a young child: DD says its hammocks are not suitable for children under 3, and that children should be supervised.

Tall campers: DD says it is comfortable up to 6ft 5inches. Bring insulation for colder weather: DD suggests a DD Underblanket, or a camping mat between the layers with three velcro patches to help hold it in place. A 2018 independent review found sleeping mats slipped to the side, so test your set-up at home first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the DD Frontline hammock waterproof?

No. DD states that the Frontline is not waterproof, and its double-layered base is breathable rather than waterproof. Use a tarp over it in rain, or look at the DD Travel Hammock/Bivi, which has a waterproof base.

What is the difference between the DD Frontline and the DD Travel hammock?

The Frontline has a breathable double-layered base and is not waterproof, while the Travel has a waterproof base. Both have a built-in mosquito net and pre-fitted webbing, can be set up on the ground as a bivi, and are in our Hammock Camping range.

What does the DD Frontline's 125kg weight limit mean?

125kg is DD's stated maximum recommended weight limit, given as "comfortable for people up to 6ft 5in and 125kg". DD does not say whether it is a working limit or a tested breaking figure, or whether it allows for kit, so treat it as the most the hammock should carry. The suspension is a separate load, and DD notes that a flatter hang puts greater force on it.

Is the DD Frontline hammock long enough for tall people?

DD says it is comfortable for people up to 6ft 5in, and recommends lying on the diagonal for the flattest and most comfortable lie. One reviewer on DD's own site, at about 6ft 1in, said they could have used a bit more room, so if you are tall or close to the 125kg limit, ask us before you order.

Do I need a tarp with a DD Frontline hammock?

Yes, if there is any chance of rain, because the hammock is not waterproof. Our DD Tarp 3x3 Pro is described as the perfect size for individual hammock shelters, and the DD Tarp XL covers two hammocks side by side.

How heavy is the DD Frontline hammock?

The hammock weighs 850g (hammock only), and DD's spec sheet says that figure excludes the webbing and poles, so the full set-up weighs more. It comes with a stuff sack.

Can I use the DD Frontline hammock in winter or cold weather?

Yes, with insulation added. DD notes that most heat loss in a hammock is from below, so it suggests a DD Underblanket for the colder months, or a camping mat between the two layers, where three velcro patches help keep it in place. A 2018 independent review found mats slipped to the side, so try your set-up at home first.

What is included with the DD Frontline hammock, and how do I hang it?

You get the hammock, 10m of webbing (pre-fitted), elastic cord, two 60cm spreader poles and a stuff sack. DD's set-up guide asks for two alive, sturdy trees at least 15cm across and 3 to 5 metres apart, with the hammock attached at roughly head height; read DD's full set-up guide and check the cordage and knots before hanging.
