More Cover Than a 3x3, Without Going Huge

The DD Tarp XL is the step up from the DD Tarp 3x3 Pro for hammock campers who want extra shelter past the ends of the hammock. At 4.5m x 3m there is room for a hammock and your kit under one roof, and DD describe it as big enough for two hammocks side by side. How well that works depends on hammock length and spacing, so pitch with the ridge line along the 4.5m side and leave generous overhang at both ends.

Waterproofing, Fabric and Construction

The tarp is made from 190T polyester with a polyurethane coating rated to 3000mm, and the central seam is taped. A 3000mm rating is a hydrostatic head figure: how much water pressure the fabric resists before it lets water through. It suits sustained British rain, but it is a rating, not a promise for every condition. The central seam is the usual leak point on a tarp, which is why the taping matters.

There are 19 reinforced attachment points: 16 around the sides and corners and 3 along the centre ridge. That gives you plenty of ways to pitch it, from a hammock cover to a ground shelter. It weighs 1100g without pegs and guy lines and packs down to 26 x 16 x 4cm, small enough to carry on canoe and kayak trips.

Is the DD Tarp XL Right for You?

It suits hammock campers, wild campers and small groups who value space and weather cover over minimum weight. It is not the lightest option. If pack weight is your priority, the DD Superlight Tarp is listed at about half a kilogram, and the 3x3 Pro is 875g if you only need cover for one hammock. For the full range, see our camping tarps.

Pitching and Cooking Safely

A tarp is a sheet of fabric, so you need trees, poles or trekking poles to hold it up. Hammock suspension is sold separately. A dry spot for cooking is a real benefit, but polyester and PU coatings can melt and burn. Keep stoves and open flames well clear of the fabric, pitch the tarp high with open sides, and never cook in a closed shelter because of the carbon monoxide risk. Follow your stove maker's instructions.

What Is in the Box

The DD Tarp XL comes with the tarp, 4 pegs, guy lines and a stuff sack. Extra DD pegs and guy lines are available if you plan a bigger pitch. The tarp is supplied in Olive. Frequently Asked Questions

What size tarp do I need for two hammocks side by side?

A 4.5m x 3m tarp such as the DD Tarp XL is a sensible starting point for two hammocks, with the ridge line along the 4.5m side. This is a guide only, because hammock length, hang angle and spacing all change how much cover you actually get.

Is the DD Tarp XL big enough for a hammock?

It is a generous size for a hammock: at 4.5m x 3m it is larger than the 3m x 3m DD Tarp 3x3 Pro, which DD position for individual hammock shelters. Pitch it with the ridge along the 4.5m side and check the overhang covers both hammock ends. Longer hammocks need more cover, so measure yours first.

What is the difference between the DD Tarp XL and the DD Tarp 3x3 Pro?

The XL is 4.5m x 3m and weighs 1100g without pegs and guy lines. The 3x3 Pro is 3m x 3m and weighs 875g. Choose the XL for two hammocks or extra cover, and the 3x3 Pro for a single hammock at lower weight.

What does 3000mm waterproof mean on a tarp?

It is the hydrostatic head rating: the height of a water column, in millimetres, that the fabric can resist before water passes through. 3000mm suits sustained rain, and the DD Tarp XL also has a taped central seam, the usual weak point.

Does the DD Tarp XL come with pegs and guy lines?

Yes. It comes with 4 pegs, guy lines and a stuff sack. The 1100g weight excludes the pegs and guy lines.

Can I cook under the DD Tarp XL?

Keep stoves and open flames well away from the fabric, because polyester and PU coatings can melt and burn. Never use a stove in a closed shelter, as carbon monoxide can build up. Cook at an open edge with good airflow and follow your stove maker's instructions.
