Purpose-Built Solo Canoe for Rivers, Tripping and Technical Paddling
The Silverbirch Firefly 14 Solo is a true solo canoe, designed from the ground up around the position and centre of effort of a single paddler. Unlike a tandem canoe that has simply been converted for solo use, the Firefly responds directly and predictably to solo paddle strokes, weight shifts and changes in trim. The result is an efficient, lively and highly engaging canoe that rewards an active paddling style. It is at home on narrow rivers, flowing water and technical river features, while remaining capable of flat-water day trips and longer solo journeys.
British-designed and manufactured, the Firefly combines manageable off-water weight with the capacity and space needed for genuine solo adventures.
Responsive and Intuitive Handling
The Firefly’s responsive hull allows the paddler to make precise changes of direction without having to overpower the canoe. It can be carved onto edge, manoeuvred through confined river channels and controlled accurately when entering or leaving moving water. Its lively character makes it especially well suited to paddlers developing their boat control, edging, trim and advanced canoe-handling skills. Experienced paddlers will appreciate how quickly it reacts, while progressing paddlers have a canoe that continues to reward improved technique. This is not a slow or heavily damped recreational platform. The Firefly feels active beneath the paddler, providing clear feedback and an exciting connection with the water.
Built for Moving Water
Moving water is where the Firefly 14 Solo particularly comes alive. Its combination of manoeuvrability, predictable carving and solo-centred outfitting makes it an excellent choice for downriver journeys, technical river navigation and appropriately graded whitewater features. For more demanding river use, the canoe can be ordered with outfitting options such as fitted lacing and additional flotation. Paddlers should always choose appropriate safety equipment and paddle within their training, experience and the prevailing conditions.
Suitable for Canoe Sailing
The Firefly can also be configured with a fitted sailing thwart, making it a versatile choice for paddlers who want to introduce canoe sailing alongside conventional solo paddling. Its responsive character provides an engaging sailing experience, while the available outfitting options allow the canoe to be configured around the paddler’s intended use.
Capable Solo-Tripping Canoe
Despite its responsive performance, the Firefly still provides useful carrying capacity for camping equipment and expedition gear. Its published optimum total load range of 50–185kg makes it suitable for day trips, lightweight camping journeys and extended solo adventures when sensibly packed. The Firefly is particularly effective for paddlers who want to combine enjoyable river handling with enough space for overnight equipment. Those carrying substantially heavier expedition loads may be better served by one of the larger and broader Silverbirch Broadland models.

When Should You Consider a Different Canoe?
The Firefly may not be the best choice for everyone. Paddlers prioritising a particularly calm, broad and forgiving recreational platform may prefer a wider canoe with greater initial stability. Its responsive handling is a major part of the Firefly’s appeal, but it will feel livelier than a broader general-purpose design. Those regularly carrying very heavy expedition loads, additional passengers or large quantities of equipment should consider the larger Silverbirch Broadland range.
Construction Options
The Firefly 14 Solo is available in two polyethylene constructions:
Duralite
The lighter construction option, designed to reduce carrying and handling weight while retaining the durability expected from a polyethylene canoe.
Duracore+
The heavier construction option for paddlers prioritising additional robustness over minimum weight.
Selected lightweight configurations may be listed from 25.5kg. Published standard construction weights are approximately 27kg for Duralite and 29.5kg for Duracore+, although final weight can vary with trim height, gunwales, seating and additional outfitting.
Custom Build Options — Every Silverbirch Canoe
Every made to order Silverbirch canoe is built to your specification. The level of customisation is substantial — this is a genuine custom build, not a colour selector.
Shell colour
Choose from 9 standard colours, or request a custom colour combination. Custom colour bands offer an alternative to solid hull colours, allowing you to apply any of our colour options to the 9 band positions along the hull for a striped appearance. Custom colour bands are an additional cost option.
Internal colour
Choose a contrasting or matching interior colour. White is standard on all Silverbirch canoes — all other interior colours are available by request.
A note on hand-blended finishes: Custom colour combinations on Silverbirch canoes are hand-blended for each individual boat, so the way colours and colour bands merge will vary slightly from one canoe to the next. Our configurator gives a close representation of how your chosen combination will look, but we cannot guarantee an exact match to the on-screen preview. Every Silverbirch canoe is built in small batches by skilled craftspeople in Norfolk, UK — that individuality is part of what you're buying.
Outfitting

Gunwales
Available in vinyl and ash — ash for traditional warmth and repairability, vinyl for low-maintenance durability.
Seating
Seat configuration affects both comfort and how the boat handles, so it's worth deciding early. Available seating options vary by model and are shown in full in the product configurator.
Lacing colour
Lacing is included as standard on every Silverbirch canoe and comes in 11 options, including fluorescents and neutrals. Beyond colour, lacing plays a functional role: it helps secure and adjust the boat to your body, and helps secure the storage of essentials and airbags.
Yoke
A yoke makes solo portaging (carrying the canoe overhead) practical. The SIlverbirch Firefly 14 cannot be configured with a yoke due to the positioning of the boat. That is why we have created the Universal Quick Release Yoke. Designed specifically for the Firefly 14 solo to allow you to carry your boat solo without a fitted yoke.
Thwarts

End grabs
End grabs assist with lifting, carrying, and lining the canoe. Options are shown in the product configurator.
Configuration compatibility
Not every combination of options is possible. Some configurations conflict — most commonly, a centre seat cannot be combined with a fixed centre yoke, since they occupy the same position on the hull. If you want both a centre seating position and a portaging yoke, we'd recommend a detachable yoke, which clips in only when you need to carry the boat and comes off for paddling. Our configurator will flag any incompatible combinations as you build your canoe, and our team can talk you through the trade-offs before you order.
Low-Line or High-Line Trim
The Firefly can be configured with either Low-Line or High-Line trim. Low-Line trim reduces the canoe’s side profile, weight and exposure to wind. It is particularly appropriate for technical solo paddling, lighter loads and paddlers prioritising control and responsiveness. High-Line trim increases the depth and internal volume of the canoe. It offers greater buoyancy and a drier ride when carrying equipment or paddling in rougher conditions, although it also adds weight and presents a larger side profile to the wind. Lowline vs Highline—What's the Difference?
The difference between highline and lowline canoes comes down to hull depth (freeboard) — essentially how high the sides of the canoe sit above the waterline. This single design choice has a noticeable impact on handling, stability, weight, and performance in different conditions.
Highline Canoes — More Depth, More Capacity
A highline canoe has deeper sidewalls, which increases internal volume and keeps more of the hull above the water.
This results in:
- Higher load capacity – better for carrying gear, additional paddlers, or expedition setups
- Improved buoyancy – sits higher in the water, especially when loaded
- Drier ride in rough water – more protection from waves and chop
Highline trims are typically chosen for expeditions, open water crossings, or paddlers carrying heavier loads.
However, the added depth also means:
- Increased weight (typically around 10–12% more depending on the model)
- More wind exposure due to the larger side profile
Lowline Canoes — Lower Profile, Greater Control
A lowline canoe has shallower sidewalls, reducing the amount of hull above the water.
This gives you:
- Less wind resistance – easier to control in breezy conditions
- Lighter overall weight – easier to carry, load, and handle off the water
- More responsive handling – ideal for technical paddling or solo use
Lowline trims are best suited to day paddling, lighter loads, sheltered waters, and paddlers who prioritise efficiency and control over carrying capacity.
