The Silverbirch Firefly 14 Solo is a true solo canoe, designed from the ground up around the position and centre of effort of a single paddler. Unlike a tandem canoe that has simply been converted for solo use, the Firefly responds directly and predictably to solo paddle strokes, weight shifts and changes in trim. The result is an efficient, lively and highly engaging canoe that rewards an active paddling style. It is at home on narrow rivers, flowing water and technical river features, while remaining capable of flat-water day trips and longer solo journeys.
British-designed and manufactured, the Firefly combines manageable off-water weight with the capacity and space needed for genuine solo adventures.
Responsive and Intuitive Handling
The Firefly’s responsive hull allows the paddler to make precise changes of direction without having to overpower the canoe. It can be carved onto edge, manoeuvred through confined river channels and controlled accurately when entering or leaving moving water. Those carrying substantially heavier expedition loads may be better served by one of the larger and broader Silverbirch Broadland models.

Construction Options
The Firefly 14 Solo is available in two polyethylene constructions:
Duralite
The lighter construction option, designed to reduce carrying and handling weight while retaining the durability expected from a polyethylene canoe.
Duracore+
The heavier construction option for paddlers prioritising additional robustness over minimum weight.
Selected lightweight configurations may be listed from 25.5kg. Published standard construction weights are approximately 27kg for Duralite and 29.5kg for Duracore+, although final weight can vary with trim height, gunwales, seating and additional outfitting.
Low-Line or High-Line Trim
The Firefly can be configured with either Low-Line or High-Line trim. Low-Line trim reduces the canoe’s side profile, weight and exposure to wind. It is particularly appropriate for technical solo paddling, lighter loads and paddlers prioritising control and responsiveness. High-Line trim increases the depth and internal volume of the canoe. It offers greater buoyancy and a drier ride when carrying equipment or paddling in rougher conditions, although it also adds weight and presents a larger side profile to the wind. Lowline vs Highline—What's the Difference?
The difference between highline and lowline canoes comes down to hull depth (freeboard) — essentially how high the sides of the canoe sit above the waterline. This single design choice has a noticeable impact on handling, stability, weight, and performance in different conditions.
Highline Canoes — More Depth, More Capacity
A highline canoe has deeper sidewalls, which increases internal volume and keeps more of the hull above the water.
This results in:
- Higher load capacity – better for carrying gear, additional paddlers, or expedition setups
- Improved buoyancy – sits higher in the water, especially when loaded
- Drier ride in rough water – more protection from waves and chop
Highline trims are typically chosen for expeditions, open water crossings, or paddlers carrying heavier loads.
However, the added depth also means:
- Increased weight (typically around 10–12% more depending on the model)
- More wind exposure due to the larger side profile
Lowline Canoes — Lower Profile, Greater Control
A lowline canoe has shallower sidewalls, reducing the amount of hull above the water.
