P&H Virgo MV CLX – Compact CoreLite X Sea Kayak for Coastal Adventure

The P&H Virgo MV CLX is a compact, medium-volume sea kayak built for coastal day trips, weekend touring and ocean play. At 443cm long, it sits at the shorter and more manoeuvrable end of the sea-kayak spectrum, giving paddlers an appealing balance of touring efficiency, stability and responsive handling without committing to the length of a full expedition kayak.

That makes the Virgo particularly well suited to paddlers who enjoy exploring varied coastlines rather than simply covering maximum distance. It has enough effective waterline to carry speed efficiently on short-to-medium journeys, while its moderate rocker and defined chines allow it to turn decisively when edged. Whether you are exploring an estuary, working along a coastline, playing in small surf or heading out for a weekend trip, the Virgo is designed to make the journey as enjoyable as the destination.

Why choose the Virgo MV?

The MV – Medium Volume – Virgo measures 443cm long, 59cm wide and 313 litres in volume, with a maximum paddler weight of 100kg. It uses P&H's Large deck size and provides a useful middle ground between the lower-volume Virgo LV and larger Virgo HV.

Volume is about more than paddler weight alone. The right kayak will also depend on your height, build, leg length, experience, preferred fit and how much equipment you intend to carry. If you are deciding between different Virgo sizes, we recommend speaking to our team or trying the kayak where possible rather than selecting purely by the maximum weight figure.

What is CoreLite X / CLX?

CLX refers to P&H's CoreLite X construction, its premium polyethylene construction for paddlers who want the durability and practicality of a plastic sea kayak with greater hull stiffness.

Rather than using a conventional single layer of polyethylene, P&H describes CoreLite X as an advanced sandwich-layer construction engineered for an excellent stiffness-to-weight ratio. The aim is to reduce unwanted hull flex and bring the performance of polyethylene closer to that associated with composite sea kayaks while retaining the practical advantages of a rotomoulded boat.

On the Virgo MV, P&H currently lists the CoreLite X skeg model at from 25.5kg, with the equivalent MZ3 version from 26kg. Manufacturing variation means individual kayak weights can differ, so the biggest reason to choose CLX should be its stiffer, performance-focused construction, rather than weight alone.

The CLX version also includes the useful bow mini hatch as part of its specification.

Stable when you need it, responsive when you ask

The Virgo's hull combines several characteristics that make it particularly versatile.

A pronounced V through the bow and stern helps the kayak cut efficiently through the water and hold its line, while the hull softens around the centre for reassuring stability. Moderate rocker keeps the boat efficient when paddled flat but allows it to become considerably more manoeuvrable when put on edge. Hard chines then provide a defined carving surface through the turn.

That combination gives the Virgo a useful dual personality: composed enough for touring and coastal progression, but playful enough that more experienced paddlers can enjoy edging, surf and dynamic coastal environments.

The flared bow is shaped to provide lift through chop and waves, while the relatively steep bow profile maintains useful waterline length for speed.

Designed for real sea-kayaking use

This is not simply a recreational kayak stretched into a touring shape. The Virgo carries the features expected from a dedicated P&H sea kayak.

Bow and stern bulkheads create separated storage areas, with KajakSport hatch covers for secure storage. The CLX specification adds the small bow mini hatch immediately ahead of the cockpit, providing convenient access to smaller essentials.

A low-profile rear deck helps with rolling and re-entry, while deck lines, bungees, split-paddle recesses, a paddle park and security point add practical functionality for coastal paddling and rescue situations. P&H's adjustable Connect outfitting helps create positive contact between paddler and kayak for both comfort and boat control.

A strong option for day touring and developing sea kayakers

The Virgo's stability and manageable length make it an approachable step into dedicated sea kayaking, but it is not limited to new paddlers. Its responsive hull gives experienced paddlers plenty to work with when edging, surfing or exploring more technical coastlines.

For paddlers whose priority is long open-water crossings and heavily loaded expeditions, a longer sea kayak may provide greater cruising efficiency and cargo capacity. But for coastal day trips, skills development, weekend adventures, surf and ocean play, the Virgo MV occupies a particularly useful middle ground.
