A Multi-Fuel Stove for Remote and International Trips

The MSR WhisperLite International is built for people who cannot count on finding a gas canister at the end of the road. It is a pressurised liquid-fuel stove from MSR that burns white gas, kerosene or unleaded auto fuel, so you can fuel it from whatever is available locally. It suits cycle tourists, expedition paddlers and winter campers who value reliability and repairability over convenience.

Choose the Right Fuel and Jet

White gas, kerosene and unleaded auto fuel are the three fuels MSR supports for this stove. It does not run on gas canisters. Changing between fuels can mean changing the jet: on current International stoves one jet suits white gas and unleaded fuel and another suits kerosene, while older versions use different markings. Check the jet supplied with your stove against the MSR instructions before you rely on it.

Is the International Right for You?

Choose the International if you are committed to liquid fuel and mostly boil water or cook one-pot meals. If you want the option of a gas canister as well, look at the MSR WhisperLite Universal. If you cook slowly and need fine heat control, the MSR DragonFly is MSR's simmer-focused liquid-fuel stove. MSR rates the International's simmering as limited and advises very low pressure in the fuel bottle. It also needs priming before lighting, so it is not an instant-ignition stove.

Build, Weight and Maintenance

The International folds small, with packed dimensions of 15 x 10 x 10 cm, and its one-piece stamped stainless-steel leg assembly keeps weight down and simplifies field maintenance. MSR gives a minimum weight of 318 g for the stove and 423 g packaged. Neither figure includes a fuel bottle or fuel. In MSR's tests it boiled 1 litre of water in 3.5 minutes on white gas and 4.4 minutes on kerosene; real-world times will vary with weather, pot and fuel. Its Shaker Jet design lets you clear a blocked jet in the field, though deposits can still build up over time and need manual cleaning.

What Is in the Box, and What You Need to Add

You get the stove, fuel pump, windscreen, heat reflector, small-parts kit, instructions and a stuff sack. The fuel bottle is not included, and neither is fuel. MSR specifies its own fuel bottles for use with this stove. Check the Stoves & Cookware range for pots and other camp kitchen items to go with it.

Use It Outdoors Only

MSR warns never to use this stove in a tent, vestibule, vehicle or any enclosed space, because of the risk of carbon monoxide and fire. Check for fuel leaks before and after pressurising the bottle, when priming, and while the stove is lit. Take extra care below freezing, when O-rings can stiffen and leak, and never use cookware wider than 25 cm (10 in). If you are flying with it, each airline sets its own rules for camping stoves, and flammable fuel is forbidden in passenger aircraft baggage, so check with your airline first.

Frequently Asked Questions

What fuels can the MSR WhisperLite International burn?

It burns white gas, kerosene and unleaded auto fuel. MSR does not list gas canisters, diesel or aviation fuel for this model, so do not use them.

Does the WhisperLite International come with a fuel bottle?

No. The stove comes with a fuel pump, windscreen, heat reflector, small-parts kit, instructions and a stuff sack, but no fuel bottle and no fuel. MSR specifies its own fuel bottles for use with the stove.

Can the WhisperLite International use a gas canister, or do I need the Universal?

No, the International is liquid-fuel only. If you want to switch between canister gas and liquid fuel, choose the [MSR WhisperLite Universal](https://www.norfolkwatersports.co.uk/shop/msr-whisperlite-universal-stove-2365) instead.

Do I have to change the jet to use kerosene in a WhisperLite International?

Usually yes. Current International stoves use one jet for white gas and unleaded fuel and a different jet for kerosene, while older versions use other markings. Follow the manual supplied with your stove for the correct jet.

Can the WhisperLite International simmer?

Only to a limited degree. MSR lists its simmering ability as limited and advises very low bottle pressure. For regular slow cooking, the [MSR DragonFly](https://www.norfolkwatersports.co.uk/shop/msr-dragonfly-stove-2366) is designed for finer heat control.

Can I use the WhisperLite International inside a tent or vestibule?

No. MSR says to use it outdoors only and never in a tent, vestibule, vehicle or other enclosed space, because of carbon monoxide and fire risk. Read the full instructions before first use.
