Grey Owl Plume Canoe Paddle
The Grey Owl Plume is a traditional-style cherry canoe paddle designed for solo and tandem paddling in deeper water. Its long, narrow blade supports a smooth, controlled paddling rhythm, making it particularly well suited to lake paddling, deeper rivers and extended canoe touring.
The Plume can be used by bow or stern paddlers in a tandem canoe or from the centre of a solo canoe. Its slender blade enters the water cleanly and provides a more gradual application of power than a shorter, wider recreational blade. This makes it a good choice for paddlers who value efficient cruising, precise strokes and the traditional feel of a deep-water paddle.
Grey Owl constructs the Plume with a three-ply laminated cherry pear grip, a solid cherry shaft and a three-ply laminated cherry blade. The oval shaft provides a comfortable hold and helps the paddler recognise the blade’s orientation without constantly looking down.
The blade has a cambered cross-section to create a positive connection with the water. A wraparound casting-epoxy tip protects the most exposed area of the blade from normal wear, while the high-gloss polyurethane finish includes UV protection.
We consider the Plume a particularly good-value route into traditional deep-water paddling. It offers a similar long-bladed paddling concept to the Grey Owl Sagamore but uses laminated construction and a pear-shaped grip, making it a more accessible option without claiming to duplicate the Sagamore’s solid-cherry construction or exact feel.
Because the Plume has a long, slender blade, it is best used where there is enough depth to immerse the blade properly. A shorter, wider paddle will generally be more practical for consistently shallow, rocky or fast-moving water.

Choosing a size
Choose the paddle primarily by its shaft length—the distance from the top of the grip to the throat where the shaft meets the blade—rather than by overall paddle length alone. Your canoe’s seat height, paddling position and preferred stroke style will all affect the most suitable size.
| Overall Length: | 54” | 57” | 60” | 63” | 66” |

| Shaft Length: | 28 ½” | 30” | 31 ½” | 33” | 34 ½” |

Sizing:
- The overall paddle length you should order should be determined primarily by the shaft length (from the top of the grip to the throat of the paddle).
- Sit erect on a flat hard chair or the floor.
- Measure the distance from the seat of the chair/floor to your chin.
- Add 6" to your measurement to allow for water level (A chin-to-Chair measurement of 26" would add 6" to arrive at a 32" shaft length)
- Choose a paddle with the closest shaft length measurement. A variation of 1" or 2" will not have much effect on usage.
