Grey Owl Pathfinder Canoe Paddle
A real staff favourite and one of our top choices for a versatile wooden canoe paddle.
The Grey Owl Pathfinder is a great-value touring paddle designed to deliver a dependable combination of strength, control and comfort. Suitable for everything from recreational canoeing and day trips to extended wilderness routes, it is an excellent choice for paddlers looking for one capable wooden paddle for a wide variety of waterways.
The Pathfinder is commonly described as an upgraded version of Grey Owl’s popular Voyageur paddle, featuring a different blade shape and a more sculpted cobra-style grip. Its larger, cambered blade is designed to provide a strong pull, making it particularly well suited to touring and paddling a canoe carrying camping equipment.
Comfortable Cobra-Shaped Grip
One of the Pathfinder’s standout features is its five-ply laminated cherry-and-walnut grip. The contoured cobra shape provides a secure and comfortable surface for the top hand, helping the paddler maintain control during forward, steering and corrective strokes.
The shaft is made from three laminated plies of basswood and cherry and has an oval profile. This gives the lower hand a comfortable and clearly defined surface to hold while paddling.
Cambered Laminated Wooden Blade
The Pathfinder’s nine-ply blade combines walnut, basswood, butternut and black cherry. Its contrasting natural timbers give the paddle its distinctive appearance, while the laminated construction is designed to provide strength and controlled flex.
The blade has a cambered cross-section and a 120-square-inch surface area. Grey Owl describes the Pathfinder as allowing a stronger pull, making it a practical option for touring, longer trips and paddling with heavier equipment aboard.
Its versatile blade shape also makes the Pathfinder less specialised than a long, narrow traditional paddle, allowing it to perform well across a broad range of general canoeing conditions.
Wraparound Epoxy Tip Protection
The bottom of the blade is protected by a wraparound casting-epoxy tip. This reinforces an area of the paddle that is particularly vulnerable to everyday knocks and scrapes during launching, landing and general use.
The paddle is finished in a high-gloss exterior polyurethane coating with UV protection, helping to protect the laminated wood while showcasing the grain and contrasting timber construction.
Our Experience with the Grey Owl Pathfinder
“The Grey Owl Pathfinder is a real favourite amongst our staff. It is a great-value paddle with a very versatile blade shape that is ideal for a wide variety of paddling conditions.
The protected tip really aids durability, while the contoured hand grip is extremely comfortable to use. It offers exceptional value for money and is very hard to beat as an all-round paddle choice.”

- Day trips and touring
- Wilderness canoe trips
- Canoe camping
- Paddling with heavier equipment aboard
- Mixed paddling environments
- Paddlers upgrading from a basic recreational paddle

Choosing Your Paddle Length
Select your canoe paddle according to your seated position, canoe dimensions and required shaft length. Overall body height alone is not always a reliable way to choose a paddle, as seat height, gunwale height and paddling style can all affect the correct length.
