Grey Owl Guide Wooden Canoe Paddle

The Grey Owl Guide is a traditional wooden canoe paddle designed for smooth, controlled paddling on lakes, deeper rivers and recreational touring trips. Its long, slender blade provides a quiet, responsive feel in the water, making it a versatile choice for bow, stern or solo paddling.

Accessible to recreational canoeists while retaining the character of a traditional paddle, the Guide is a great-value option for paddlers looking for natural wooden construction, comfortable handling and dependable performance across a variety of deeper waterways.

Traditional Cherry Construction

The Grey Owl Guide features a solid cherry shaft with an oval profile that provides a comfortable and positive hold. Its three-ply laminated cherry grip has a traditional pear shape, allowing the top hand to sit naturally while paddling and providing good control during steering and correction strokes.

The three-ply laminated cherry blade combines an attractive natural wood finish with a durable construction suited to regular recreational and touring use.

Long, Slender Blade for Deeper Water

The Guide’s long, relatively narrow blade is intended primarily for deeper-water paddling. Once submerged, it provides smooth power and useful feedback through the stroke without requiring an especially wide blade.

This traditional blade shape is well suited to relaxed touring and controlled manoeuvring, whether the paddle is being used in the bow, from the stern or by a solo canoeist.

The Grey Owl Guide is particularly suitable for:

  • Lake and loch paddling
  • Deeper, gently moving rivers
  • Recreational canoe touring
  • Bow, stern or solo use
  • Traditional steering and correction strokes
  • Paddlers who prefer the feel and appearance of a wooden paddle

Because of its longer blade, the Guide is less suitable for very shallow waterways where a shorter, broader blade may be easier to use and less likely to contact the bottom.

Cambered Blade

The Guide has a cambered blade cross-section designed to provide a smooth and controlled feel through the water. This supports efficient forward paddling while retaining the feedback and manoeuvrability associated with a traditional wooden canoe paddle.

A wraparound casting-epoxy tip provides added protection to the lower edge of the blade during normal use. As with any quality wooden paddle, it should not be repeatedly pushed against rocks, banks or other hard surfaces.

Protective High-Gloss Finish

A high-gloss exterior polyurethane finish helps protect the wood from water exposure and includes UV protection. The clear finish also highlights the natural grain and colouring of the cherry construction.

To help preserve the paddle, store it hanging or laid flat in a dry area away from excessive heat. Avoid leaving it standing on its blade or lying in prolonged direct sunlight, as this may encourage the wood to bow or warp.

Choosing the Correct Length

The Grey Owl Guide is available in several overall lengths. Because traditional canoe paddles have longer blades than many conventional recreational paddles, the overall length should not be compared directly with a shorter-bladed model.

Grey Owl recommends choosing a paddle primarily according to the shaft length, measured from the top of the grip to the throat where the blade begins. Your seating height, canoe depth and preferred paddling position should also be considered when selecting a size.
