Grey Owl Fleetwood Solo and Freestyle Canoe Paddle
The Grey Owl Fleetwood is an ultra-light wooden canoe paddle designed for solo paddling, freestyle canoeing and recreational touring. Its low-weight cedar construction makes it particularly well suited to paddlers looking for a refined paddle to complement a modern, sleek and lightweight canoe.
The Fleetwood has a short, broad blade measuring 21 inches long by 8 inches wide. Its cambered cross-section creates a shaped blade face, while the laminated cedar construction keeps the paddle remarkably light across its available size range.
Ultra-Light Laminated Cedar Blade
The blade is constructed from seven laminated cedar plies and covered with a clear 4oz fibreglass cloth overlay. This fibreglass layer adds protection to the wooden blade while allowing the natural laminated cedar construction to remain visible.
Cast epoxy protection extends around the complete blade edge, helping to protect the areas most exposed to everyday contact and wear.
Laminated Oval Shaft
The shaft is constructed from three laminated plies of basswood and white cedar. Its oval cross-section provides a comfortable and clearly defined shape in the lower hand.
At the top of the paddle is a three-ply laminated basswood grip with a traditional pear-shaped profile. This compact, symmetrical grip accommodates a variety of comfortable hand positions while paddling.
Our View
The Fleetwood is a distinctive choice for solo paddlers who want an exceptionally lightweight wooden paddle with a shorter, broader blade. We think it is particularly well matched to light solo canoes, where its low weight and neatly proportioned blade complement the responsive character of the boat.
It is also one of the more specialised paddles in the Grey Owl range. Paddlers primarily looking for a general-purpose paddle for mixed canoeing conditions may prefer one of Grey Owl’s more conventional all-round or tripping designs.
