Grey Owl Hammerhead Whitewater Canoe Paddle

Power in your hands. The Grey Owl Hammerhead is a heavy-duty wooden canoe paddle designed for moving water, whitewater and river tripping. Its short, broad blade produces a strong and immediate stroke, making it particularly well suited to paddlers who need dependable power and control when negotiating currents, breaking into or out of eddies, and making decisive steering corrections.

This is not a lightweight touring paddle designed primarily for relaxed mileage on open lakes. The Hammerhead is a more substantial, specialist paddle made for paddlers who value strength, blade feedback and confident control in lively water. Grey Owl rates it for moving water and Class I–III whitewater conditions.

Strong, controlled strokes

The Hammerhead’s 19-inch cambered blade is available in two widths. The 7-inch blade has a surface area of approximately 115 square inches, while the larger 8-inch version increases this to approximately 130 square inches.

Both options provide a broad working surface for powerful forward strokes, braces and corrective manoeuvres. The 7-inch blade is the less demanding option, while the 8-inch blade offers a larger catch for paddlers who prefer maximum power from each stroke.

Reinforced laminated blade

The seven-ply blade is laminated from butternut, walnut and basswood, combining contrasting natural timbers with a construction developed for demanding use. A two-ply fibreglass cloth overlay reinforces the blade, while the wraparound casting-epoxy tip helps protect the area most likely to encounter rocks, gravel and shallow riverbeds.

The blade is finished in high-gloss exterior polyurethane with UV protection, helping shield the wood from water and sunlight while highlighting the laminated timber pattern.

Pronounced oval shaft and mushroom grip

A three-ply laminated ash and basswood shaft gives the Hammerhead a tough yet relatively lightweight construction. Its pronounced oval profile provides clear blade orientation in the hand, helping the paddler feel the position of the blade without needing to look at it.

At the top, the oiled walnut mushroom grip supports the varied hand positions and precise control commonly required during technical river paddling. The combination gives the Hammerhead a reassuringly solid and responsive feel when the water becomes more demanding.

Supplied uncut for individual sizing

The Hammerhead is supplied with an uncut shaft, allowing the paddle to be shortened and the grip fitted at a length suited to the individual paddler, canoe and preferred paddling position.

Correct cutting and grip installation are required before use. Because shortening a wooden paddle is permanent, carefully establish the required shaft length before making any cuts or ask an experienced paddle outfitter to complete the work.

Who is the Grey Owl Hammerhead for?

The Hammerhead is a strong choice for:

  • Open-canoe paddlers tackling moving water
  • Whitewater canoeing in suitable Class I–III conditions
  • River and wilderness trips involving rocky or shallow sections
  • Paddlers who prefer a short, broad and powerful blade
  • Anyone wanting an uncut paddle that can be sized individually
  • Bow, stern or solo paddlers seeking decisive control

For predominantly calm-water touring or long days where easy cadence and low swing weight are the priority, a narrower touring or traditional blade may be more appropriate. The Hammerhead is best chosen when power, reinforcement and moving-water control matter more than effortless cruising.
